There's plenty of events to look forward to at the Commonwealth Games. Ones that instantly come to mind are the Sevens, even without Fiji, which are bound to be awesome. The Netball's one of the only events with a full-strength field, so that should be a good watch too. Valerie Adams will surely clean-up, and Nick Willis should definitely be near the top of the podium in the 1500 metres. But what about the other athletes? Here are a few other things I think will be worth your while.
FIVE ATHLETES TO WATCH OUT FOR:
Joseph Parker - BOXING
This Super Heavyweight prodigy is a big chance to get on the podium in Delhi. He's already won three medals this year, including silver at the Junior Olympics. This 18 year-old from Manukau is destined for the big time.
Stuart Farquhar - JAVELIN
Sure, giggle at his funny last name, but this 28 year-old will be having the last laugh in Delhi I reckon. A solid improver in the world of spear chucking, and he'll easily improve from his 7th place finish four years ago.
Sian Law - WRESTLING
This 29 year-old from Tawa is New Zealand's first female Commonwealth Games wrestler. Her name's pronounced "Sharn" by the way, get it wrong and she'll kick your ass!
Alison Shanks - TRACK CYCLING
Five years ago Shanks was playing netball for the Otago Rebels, now she's a cycling machine. Expect her to cane it in the 3000m individual pursuit, especially since her specialty event won't be part of the London Olympics.
Nadine Stanton - SHOOTING
When this tough 35 year-old shouts out "Yeah!", you better duck for cover. She's a past Commonwealth Games gold medalist in clay shooting and come close to that again.
Cheers,
John Day
