Put your hand up if you’ve never bagged Brendon McCullum. Now put your hand down because you’re a liar.
Everyone’s given McCullum a bit of shit over the years because he’s deserved it. But after his match-saving 225 against India he deserves a massive pat on the back along with another huge IPL contract which he’s bound to receive. And fair enough too.
Batsmen of his attacking quality don’t come around too often, especially in New Zealand, and his “failures” before this test match were often maligned far more than say a Craig Cumming or Matthew Bell because of his awesome potential. And after nine years in the team, it seems as though he’s finally realised that if he makes the opposition get him out, he can become one of most devastating test batsmen in the world along with the likes of Virender Sehwag and Chris Gayle.
When I heard B-Mac, Bazza, Mac Daddy, McAwesome or whatever you want to call him was giving away the keeping duties to become a specialist opener I had no belief he’d be a success. Not because he doesn’t have the class, but because he didn’t have the patience. But, yet again, I’ve been proved wrong in a good way. What’s next? A test series win in India? Maybe, just maybe…
Good to see Jamie How back in the ODI squad for the tour of India and hopefully the team can get us back on track in the coloured clothing too.
Cheers,
John Day
