The latest home showcased on Grand Designs NZ was one of New Zealand's first hemp homes, with special shielding against electromagnetic radiation.

Greg Whitham and Gayle Avery's French farmhouse-style home is a whopping 320 square metres, with the living area the size of a bowling alley.

Beneath its outer plaster is a thick wall of hemp and in the bedroom wing, electromagnetic shielding in the walls and on the windows.

"There's no doubt this is an enormous home, but then farmhouses have traditionally been generous buildings - what's truly extraordinary about it can't be seen," says host Chris Moller.

Earlier in the episode, Moller stood in a cannabis field in the Netherlands, among plants that would end up as industrial hemp for the Taranaki building.
