The woman who was captured on dashcam video clambering onto the bonnet of an expensive McLaren car for a photo has offered an apology to the car's owner.

The car was parked on Ponsonby Rd while the owner had a drink across the road at Ponsonby Social Club. Dashcam security camera footage captured the moment when the woman climbed on the bonnet of the vehicle, only to be spotted by the car's owner. He shouted at her from across the road and she got off, getting into a taxi with her friends.

The woman, who doesn't wish to be named, told Newshub she is "so embarrassed" about her actions and has offered an apology to Andy Ko, the owner of the car.

Mr Ko and his friend Patrick had asked for an apology, saying you don't climb on people's cars, regardless of the type of vehicle, adding it is easy to damage the light aluminium bonnet of a McLaren 675LT Spider.

Video of the incident was shared widely on social media and people quickly recognised the culprit. Facebook users discovered she had incriminated herself on her Instagram account, where she had posted an image taken on the McLaren. That image has now been deleted.

"I am sorry for what I did that night," the woman told Newshub.

"I did say 'I'm sorry' to the owner/driver at the time. He heard me, did not say anything more and did not approach me.

"You can see on the video I did not run away from the incident. Unfortunately, there was no sound recorded, otherwise you would be able to hear what I said… I am quite surprised by the reaction that I have caused.

"I'm so embarrassed about my actions. I'd like to say sorry to Andy again," she said.

But Mr Ko told Newshub he's yet to hear from the woman directly, and he denies that she apologised on the night.

"We couldn't have heard her say, 'I'm sorry' (that's if she did) at the time of the incident, because we were on the other side of the road, and she would have had to yell it out!" he said.

"Honestly, I don't think she is sincerely apologizing for her actions and is in denial. But anyway, her so-called apology is accepted."

The McLaren 675LT Spider was launched in the United Kingdom for NZ$643,750 in late 2015.
