A flight packed full of plumbers, en route from Norway to Germany, was ironically forced to make a U-turn after the plane toilet suffered a plumbing issue.

About 85 plumbers were onboard flight DY1156 bound for Munich from Oslo, as they travelled there for work with the Rørkjøp plumbing company.

But just as the plane was nearing the Swedish border, it was forced to turn around because the toilets onboard were not functioning properly.

Plumbers were eager to address the issue, but were told that it wasn't possible and that the plane would have to return after circling to rid itself of excess fuel.

"We would have liked to fix the restrooms, but unfortunately it had to be done from the outside and we didn't risk sending a plumber to work at 10,000m," Rørkjøp chief executive Frank Olsen told Norwegian news website Dagbladet.

"There was a good atmosphere in the plane, what with the irony about the broken toilets."

Another plumber aboard the flight said everyone accepted the "good humour" in the incident.

Upon landing back in Oslo, technicians fixed the toilet problem and the aircraft was soon back in the air.
