Eddie Van Halen dead at 65

Rock News 07/10/2020

Iconic Van Halen guitarist, Eddie Van Halen has died at the age of 65 after a battle with cancer.

The news was confirmed by his son, Wolfgang. "I can't believe I'm having to write this, but my father, Edward Lodewijk Van Halen, has lost his long and arduous battle with cancer this morning," he posted on Twitter.

"He was the best father I could ever ask for. Every moment I've shared with him on and off stage was a gift. My heart is broken and I don't think I'll ever fully recover from this loss. I love you so much, Pop."

Eddie's health issues started in 2000 when he was treated for tongue cancer. At first, the rocker who traditionally wouldn't talk about his well-being, only admitted that he had undergone an outpatient procedure to prevent cancer. Later, he revealed that a third of his tongue was removed in surgery and was declared cancer-free two years later.

However, his cancer returned a decade later in 2011, this time spreading to his esophagus. Eddie was forced to have emergency surgery afterwards due to a severe (but unrelated) case of digestive disorder diverticulitis.

Cancer is like a cockroach

Van Halen once told Howard Stern. "It just comes back stronger."

In the last few years, Eddie undertook various non-traditional procedures, including an experimental radioactive rinse in an attempt to keep the cancer at bay.
