BREAKING: Former Pantera drummer Vinnie Paul has died, age 54

music news 23/06/2018

Vinnie Paul, co-founder of Pantera, drummer of DamagePlan and mostly recently Hellyeah, has died aged 54.

Pantera's facebook page announced the news:

"Vincent Paul Abbott aka Vinnie Paul has passed away,"

"Paul is best known for his work as the drummer in the bands Pantera and Hellyeah. No further details are available at this time. The family requests you please respect their privacy during this time."

Vinnie Paul co-founded Pantera with his brother Darrell "Dimebag" Abbott,  back in 1981.

The band fell out and the brothers and formed their new co-project Damageplan in 2003. While performing together, live on stage, Darrell was shot dead along with three fans in the crowd, by a man named Nathan Gale.

Vinnie Paul and former Pantera vocalist Philip Anselmo remained on bad terms, for the rest of Vinnie's life.

We've all hoped for a  Pantera reunion tour over the years, but Vinnie saw no Pantera without Dimebag.

He told Metal Hammer: "I'm not interested because there's no Dime, and, to me, if there's no Dime, there's no PANTERA. That's my reason. It's behind me. I've moved on. I play in a band called HELLYEAH and I really love doing it. I'm looking forward to moving forward; I don't wanna live in the past."

We're absolutely gutted hearing this news, way too soon. Vinnie Paul was a god father of metal.

RIP Vinnie.

We'll keep you updated as more details emerge.
