Australian cricketer Ben Cutting needed five stitches after copping a ball to the face while attempting a catch during Brisbane Heat's Big Bash League defeat to the Melbourne Renegades on Thursday.

Defending a target of 145, the Heat were in the field when Renegades opener Marcus Harris top-edged a delivery from James Pattinson straight into the air, and Cutting managed to get his hands to the ball before it slipped through his grasp and hit him square in the face between the eyebrows.

Medical staff rushed in to attend to the 31-year-old, who was left bloodied. Cutting left the field immediately and later returned after passing a concussion test.

Props to Cutting who saw the funny side, joking he needs a plastic surgeon on twitter.

"The first thing she [my girlfriend] said was 'that looks like a monobrow, we need to get that fixed', so any good plastic surgeons out there, send me a message," Cutting said.

"I thought I held the ball long enough in the first place, it was an interesting decision.

"And literally a rush of blood; the adrenaline kicked in, I saw Mujeeb (Ur Rahman) out of corner of eye, tried to throw it to him."

On the match front, the Renegades registered a comfortable eight-wicket win at the Gabba in Brisbane.

Kiwi Brendon McCullum (50) top scored for the Heat as they set the Renegades 145 for victory, which they easily reached with 26 balls to spare.
