Watching too much porn can actually rewire your brain - and not in a good way

News 11/05/2022

Studies have revealed that watching too much porn can literally rewire your brain into a "more juvenile state".

We joke a lot about porn and 'wrestling the dragon' here at The Rock, but consuming too much of anything can be bad for you, and porn is no different.

Watching a lot of porn causes damage to the part of the brain that dictates "morality, willpower, and impulse control" (the prefrontal cortex). Kids have a small, untrained prefrontal cortex, which explains why they have bloody tantrums all the time and draw on the walls and shit.

When the prefrontal cortex starts taking on damage, a person's behaviour becomes more childlike - impulsive and reckless - and that's not cute when you're not a wee sprog.

With the ridiculously easy access to pornography nowadays it's important we recognize the negative repercussions of excessive porno consumption.

Porn has also been compared to drug abuse, as those who watch porn all the time "find themselves wanting and needing more porn, even though they don't necessarily like it".

Porn addicts also build up a kind of tolerance, becoming less and less interested in what they used to like and leading them to "graduate to more extreme and unconventional forms of porn". This trend is illustrated in Pornhub statistics where more and more f*cked up porn categories are gaining popularity.

Overdoing it with porn also leads to less satisfying sex IRL, which no one wants.

When watching porn, the brain releases a ton of dopamine which "can damage the dopamine reward system and leave it unresponsive to natural sources of pleasure". This means that when experiencing the 'real thing' the porn consumer is not as aroused.

Too much porn can also lead to a lower quality of marriage; less commitment to a romantic partner; more depressive symptoms; and overall poor mental health.

Basically, you can become too reliant on pornography for sexual (and even social) stimulation.
