‘Let There Be Drums!’, a documentary about the importance of drumming in music, will feature Ringo Starr and the late, great, Taylor Hawkins.
The documentary - set to come out on October 28th - is directed by Justin Kreutzmann, the son of The Grateful Dead’s stickman, Bill Kreutzmann who will also feature in the flick.
In what we’re sure will be an emotional part of the film, it is believed the Taylor Hawkins interview is one of, if not the, last interviews he ever did before his untimely death.
Deadline reports that ‘Let There Be Drums!’ will “examine the essential role drumming plays in great bands and how music passes from generation to generation.”
Definitely sounds like a bit of us.
The doco is going to be choc-a-bloc full of legendary drummers. As well as Kreutzmann, Ringo, and Hawkins, it will also feature The Police’s Stewart Copeland, Chad Smith from The Red Hot Chilli Peppers, Guns N’ Roses’ percussionist Matt Sorum, and Mickey Hart of The Grateful Dead.
Sheesh - talk about a banging lineup.
Justin said that the idea for the documentary came when he got a camera as a Christmas present and filmed his dad at one of the Grateful Dead’s performances almost fifty years ago.
“The idea of doing the movie ‘Let There Be Drums!’ really came to me as a gift. Literally,” he said in a statement.
“It started Christmas Day, 1977 when I was given a Super-8 film camera. The first home movies I filmed were of my Dad on stage at Winterland in San Francisco. They were shot from my perspective, sitting right behind him on the drum riser so he could keep an eye on me during the Grateful Dead’s performances."
