Are you all set for a great summer on the water? The Rock wants everyone to have an epic time on Canterbury’s waterways and the easiest way you can do this is by understanding what you need to do before heading out and making sure you have the right equipment.
That’s why we’ve teamed up with Environment Canterbury and Safer Boating to help you enjoy your summer on the water with an epic money-ca-n’t-buy prize.
WIN a 4-hour charter for you and three mates in Kaikoura including accommodation - how good!
To enter, tune into 93.7 The Rock Canterbury and listen out for ‘Reel it In’ ad breaks to catch yourself an entry. You'll need to act fast to make sure you text in 'REEL' to 3520 before ‘the line snaps’ at the end of the ad break!
Whether you skipper a boat, paddleboard, kayak or waka ama, always prep your craft, check your gear and know the conditions.
Look after your mates, and always remember these key safer boating code messages...
Always wear a lifejacket regardless of the conditions
Always check the forecast before heading out; If you’re going out on the ocean, check the marine forecast. If you’re heading out on the lakes, check the rural forecast.
Always take two waterproof ways to call for help; make sure you carry at least two that will work when wet, and that work in the area you're in. Communications equipment includes VHF radio, beacons, flares and cell phones. In parts of our high country lakes, VHF devices will not work. Remember to keep your cellphone in a dry bag!
