Portugal striker Eder struck in extra time to lift Portugal to a surprise 1-0 win over France in the Euro 2016 final.

In a game that had few chances inside 90 minutes, Eder drove in the winner from 25 yards after 109 minutes to leave the tournament hosts stunned.

Portugal came into the game as underdogs, but soon found themselves further on the back foot when a visibly distraught Cristiano Ronaldo was substituted after 24 minutes after being unable to shake off an early injury. Dimitri Payet clattered into Ronaldo's standing leg in a tackle after only eight minutes and, despite receiving treatment, the Real Madrid star was unable to fully recover.

Ronaldo returned to the pitch with a heavily strapped leg but minutes later signalled to the bench he could not continue and was replaced by Ricardo Quaresma. French striker Antoine Griezmann went closest in the first half when his looping header was tipped over the bar by Portugese keeper Rui Patricio.

Griezmann squandered an even better opportunity in the second half when he broke away from some sloppy Portuguese defending and headed Kingsley Coman's cross over the bar.

French substitute Andre-Pierre Gignac was inches away from winning the game in added time when he turned Pepe, but saw his shot come off the inside of the post as the game headed for extra time. Portugal hit the crossbar from a free-kick, before Eder stepped up to score the winner.
