A horrifying crash has marred the final of the women's road race in Rio.

Dutch rider Annemiek van Vleuten had opened up a lead on the chasing pack with 12 kilometres remaining before taking a corner awkwardly, tumbling over her handle bars and landing head first in the gutter.

The 33-year-old was removed via ambulance, Dutch chef de mission later Maurits Hendriks confirming she was conscious and in a stable condition in hospital.
