Sickening moment amusement park ride snaps in half is the stuff of nightmares

Two people were killed and 29 injured.

A ride in an Indian amusement park snapped during operation, sending passengers crashing to the ground and reportedly killing two people.

The incident happened on Sunday (local time) at Balvatika Amusement Park in the state of Gujarat, The Daily Mail reports. The ride worked like a pendulum, strapping passengers into the bottom of a large arm and swinging back and forth.

Video shows the moment the ride's load-bearing cable snapped at the apex of one of the swings, sending the ride's passengers plummeting.

Two people died in the incident and a further 29 were injured. The ride could hold 32 people and on that day only one seat was empty, The Daily Mail reports.

At least three of the injured are in a critical condition.

An inquiry into the incident has already been ordered. Gujarat chief minister Vijay Rupani said action will be taken against those responsible for the ride's failure.

Police said those responsible for the incident could face charges of culpable homicide amounting to murder. Representatives of the ride's owners, Superstar Amusement Private Limited, have been detained by the police.
