Drinking alcohol every day could help you live to 90, researchers find

Now this is a health scheme we think we could get on board with.

A group of researchers from Maastricht University Medical Centre in The Netherlands found that people who had a drink of alcohol daily were up to 40% more likely to live till their 90 than those who didn't.

For women, a glass of wine each day, and for men, spirits such as whisky or gin have been found to have the most benefits.

However, this study highlights that only one drink a day sees benefits, not binge drinking. 15 grams a day is the ideal amount, which is about equivalent to a small glass of wine, or half a pint of beer.

The study was done with 5,000 people, who were mostly born between 1914 - 1918.

Researchers still don't really know why this is the case, but it could be due to the scientific phenomenon of hormesis - the theory that something may be beneficial in small amounts but dangerous in large amounts.

Well what we're taking from this is half a pint a day, keeps the doctor away.
