The guitar that Kurt Cobain played during Nirvana's MTV Unplugged in New York concert is set to go up for auction at a starting estimate of $1 million.

Cobain's famous 1959 Martin D-18E will be part of a "Music Icons" sale at Julian's Auctions on 19th and 20th of June on the Julien's Auction's website. Before that, the guitar will be showcased at London's Hard Rock Cafe in Piccadilly Circus.

The guitar will also come with Cobain's original hard-shell guitar case, customised with a few baggage-claim ticket stubs, an Alaska Airlines sticker, and a flyer from Poison Ideas 1990 album, Feel the Darkness.

Inside the case is a "suede stash bag", a half-filled pack of Martin guitar strings, and three guitar picks.

Last year, Cobain's green cardigan that he wore during the same performance sold for $526,067 NZD - so it'll be interesting to see how much the guitar goes for.

Other notable items going to auction at Julien's Music Icons auction event include a page of handwritten lyrics by Paul McCartney, Prince's custom-made 1984 blue cloud guitar, as well as items from Eddie Van Halen, AC/DC, Guns N' Roses, David Bowie, and more.
