A Wellington man won a million dollars on the lottery after a road closure made him change his plans to visit family.
The tradie was meant to visit his family on Friday, but heard the news about road closures on State Highway 1.
The resulting traffic jam was so bad he knew he wouldn't make it to a family dinner that night.
Instead the man, who wanted to remain anonymous, picked up dinner from the supermarket and checked the Lotto ticket he had in his back pocket.
The ticket was not a winner and he told the lady who served him at Countdown Newton, he would be back to claim the big one another day. He purchased another ticket for the Saturday draw.
On Sunday he checked the ticket, when he saw the first few numbers in the First Division draw matched, he thought he might have won around $100.
"Then the next I knew, I had all six in a row," he told Lotto NZ.
The winning ticket saw him taking home $1 million.
He then upgraded his plans and flew to see his family.
Now that's really making the most of a shitty situation, wow.
He said he would like to start his own business and maybe buy a bit of land.
"And of course, I'll help out my family," he said.
