Makita has announced that it is adding a new tool to its Next Generation Technology (XGT) system of cordless power tools but it's not one you'd expect.

The tool manufacturer has announced a cordless microwave which they said is the first-ever cordless microwave that is directly powered by their XGT line of batteries.

With a power output of 500W, the Makita microwave can heat up food for up to 8 minutes, after which it automatically switches to a lower power 350W mode. The microwave has an 8L capacity and can reheat about 11 refrigerated lunches or 20 drinks each 200 mL with (2) XGT 40V Max 8Ah batteries installed.

Makita claims the cordless microwave is ideal for a wide range of environments, including building and construction sites, disaster preparedness, and even "in-car dining".

The microwave will join Makita's existing lunchroom and worksite products which include radios, chilly bins and warmers, a coffee machine, and a kettle.

Given Makita's growing presence in the outdoor recreational space, the microwave is also expected to be marketed for camping, tailgating, and other outdoor activities. The microwave features a folding top handle and an optional carrying strap that loops through slots in the handle for an additional carrying option.

Makita has also included a number of safety features in the cordless microwave. The microwave will immediately deactivate if the door is opened during use, and there is an additional safety feature that deactivates the microwave if it's tilted.

The microwave also features a USB port for charging electronic devices, with a maximum output of 2.4A at 5V.

Despite some scepticism and April Fools' Day jokes over the years, Makita's microwave is a real product and one that promises to be a game-changer for those who need to heat up food in environments where there is no AC power source.
