Hawke's Bay couple find bag with life-changing amount of cash, heroically hand it over to cops

I'd grab it and bolt.

An unsuspecting couple in Hawke’s Bay found themselves stumbling amongst a HUUGE amount of cash, and we’re not just talking a couple hundred bucks, but a whopping 70 bloody grand.

The couple had just picked their son up from daycare when they spotted an abandoned blue canvas bag on the side of the road - cause that doesn't sound dodgy, eh?

Police in Hawke’s Bay told NZ Herald the bag was electronically locked and, upon closer inspection, they discovered it belonged to a bank containing a noice $70,592.60 in cash

At this point, it’s starting to sound like the opening scene of the next hot-shot heist movie.

They handed that bag of riches over to the police.

Now, if it was me I'd snag that bag and hightail my ass to an exotic island off the grid, but these Hawke's Bay heroes proved that their moral compass points straight north, no matter how enticing a bag of money may be.

For legal reasons that last part was just for shits and gigs.

Inspector Chris Wallace says the actions of the couple were a true test of honesty and integrity.

”As the great British writer CS Lewis said, ‘Integrity is doing the right thing, even when no one is watching.’ It is fair to say that this couple certainly did that, and more,” he told the publication.

”One of our long-serving colleagues noted he’d never heard of such a story in the 40 years he’s been based in Hastings.”

”As a result of this find, the bank and its security company were notified. The cash bag was collected within minutes and made its way to the intended destination.”

Big ups to the Hawke's Bay couple, maybe they'll get a slice of that $70k as a reward – or at the very least, they've earned a life of respect from us.
