Most of us grew up with Sir Peter Leitch, AKA the Mad Butcher yelling G'DAY at us almost daily on the telly, but even in his retirement he's keeping us informed.
Old mate's content still revolves heavily around sausages, but instead of talking about how much per kilo, he's showing off which ones feature in his brekky spreads from "paradise" on Waiheke Island.
You're also gonna see a lot of "wishing everybody a very happy day today,” and “remember to share the love out there". There are regular appearances from Leitch's seagull mate, Percy, as well as his human mates. It's an absolute bright spot in the swamp that is modern social media.
Seeing the Kiwi legend and Warriors superfan hold up a plate of baked beans on toast in one hand, a firm thumb up in the other and a smile on his dial is a pleasant sight and a reminder of the old days of Facebook.
Before our feeds were full of recycled memes, clickbait articles and conspiracy theories, we saw pictures from the cousin’s vacation, how the sister’s dog was doing and a couple of inspirational quotes to boot.
Leitch knows that’s what it’s all about. One of his most popular posts is a simple video of the waves on Onetangi beach, which he shared "for all of those people that can’t get to the beach they may be in hospital... or sick at home".
After making you shed a couple of tears, he'll have you cracking up with his weekly update on Percy the photogenic seagull, who he captures simply kicking it on Waiheke.
“What do you get a seagull for Christmas?” he jokes in one post. “I’m buggered if I know.”
His feed also serves as a reminder that Waiheke Island is a scenic paradise that can be home to Santa Claus playing the trumpet on a dingy.
You’ll even become familiar with his friends and family. Leitch will share a picture of his mates whenever he’s out for a meal with them like he did with ‘Ken the bookman’, who’s “not a bad guy” and the one and only Sir Graham Henry.
Occasionally, he'll get his sports reporter hat on and treat fans to an interview with rugby league greats. His most recent one was with Craig Smith, who represented New Zealand as well as many NRL teams.
If you had any doubt that this account isn’t the greatest there is, Leitch replies to nearly every comment on his posts. He calls every commenter his “buddy” and when he’s called an “inspiration” or “a great ambassador for the human race” he plays it down, replying the same thing each time.
“That’s very kind of you mate, but I’m just an old Butcher trying to share the love out there.”
