Pearl Jam, Billie Joe Armstrong, and Rage Against the Machine have all furiously responded to the Roe V. Wade abortion ruling, calling it 'fucking stupid', 'devastating', and a violation of personal freedoms.
Over the weekend, the Supreme Court of the United States of America decided to overturn the Roe V Wade ruling which allowed women the right to have an abortion - a decision that at least 60% of Americans disagree with - shocking stuff from the 'land of the free' and 'most democratic country in the world'.
Green Day’s Billie Joe Armstrong told the audience at the band’s ‘Hella Mega Tour’ that he’s “renouncing his citizenship” and that there’s “too much fucking stupid in the world. He put it even more bluntly when he said:
Pearl Jam also made a statement condemning the decision by SCOTUS. Eddie Vedder said at a concert, "What we’re asking you is to support the freedom to choose.
The band posted the speech on Twitter, and added some more thoughts:
“Today’s decision impacts everyone and it will particularly affect poor women who can’t afford to travel to access health care,” the tweet said before providing a phone number that Americans can text to vote.
Rage Against the Machine also released a statement saying they are ‘disgusted’ with the decision, “which will have a disproportionate impact on poor, working-class and undocumented BIPOC communities.”
The band said that they have raised $475,000 from charity tickets that they plan to donate to reproductive rights organisations in Wisconsin and Illinois.
It’s always awesome to see bands and public figures come out against injustices when they arise, which seem to be more and more often nowadays.
It's not the first time we've heard from some of these rock legends on the subject. Last month, Eddie Vedder told a crowd that any woman dating a man who is anti-abortion should not have sex with the bloke.
"I think if that guy is not pro-choice, then he shouldn't be allowed to fuck you," he said.
