Nintendo 64's GoldenEye 007 set to be officially remastered for Xbox and Switch

Yessss boii!

One of our favourite video games, GoldenEye 007, is getting remastered - yes boiii.

The news has officially been announced by the original developer Rare, 25 years after its release, and will be available on Nintendo Switch and Xbox Game Pass.

The remastered game includes 4K resolution, split screen multiplayer, and smoother frame rates. Rare has promised that the game will be “faithfully recreated,” keeping the classic campaign mode and cheat modes.

The switch version will also exclusively include an online mode so you can play with your mates - something you couldn’t do back in 1997 when it was originally released.

If you’ve forgotten what the game is like, or you’ve never played it (you’re missing out), the official website gives you a refresher:

“The popular game – based on the 1995 film – lets players control Bond through a series of levels following the GoldenEye film story. In multiplayer mode, up to four players can compete in several scenarios based on elements from You Only Live Twice, The Living Daylights, The Man With the Golden Gun and Licence to Kill.”

This remaster has been a long time coming. Back in 2008, an HD remaster was supposed to come to Xbox 360, but licensing and rights issues got in the way, according to The Verge. That remaster ended up being leaked last year - but it didn’t include all of the features that the official remaster does.

If you already own a digital copy of Rare Replay, then GoldenEye 007 will be completely free. The release date is yet to be announced, but fans can expect it “soon.”
