Christopher Luxon says National will fund Mike King's Gumboot Friday if elected

"We would fund Gumboot Friday, but also some other great organisations across the country as well."

Following Mike’s chat with us earlier in the month, where he broke down about NZ’s “fucked up” mental health system, it was revealed that $3,073,864 had been raised for this year's Gumboot Friday.

But that was without any government funding, something Mike and Kiwis have asked again, and again for.

This morning, National's Christopher Luxon joined the Morning Rumble and Bryce didn't hold back on asking the important question.

"the question is if you become the leader and national run the country," Bryce began.  He [Mike King] said that what they want is $5 million. Would National fund Gumboot Friday?"

"Yeah, I reckon we would. Yeah, we would." Said Luxon.

"We would fund Gumboot Friday, but also some other great organisations across the country as well."

"So what I'm going to do is different, I'm going to have a dedicated mental health minister, someone like Matt Doocey, who's got that background and motivation for being in Parliament.

"Two, you've got to put targets in about access to services and make them really measurable and transparent and visible for everybody to see how much progress we are or are not making.

"You've got to deal with the workforce challenges because we are short a lot of psychologists, social workers, counsellors, and access to more services.

"But most importantly, we get the cash out of Wellington and put them into frontline services like Mike and others, up and down the country, and get them powered up and moving quickly to be able to do what they do."
